Thomas Johnson's 1893 Mill Paycheck

We love receiving personal treasures that connect to Swansonville's past! This incredible item was recently shared by a descendant of Thomas Johnson, who worked at the Port Ludlow mill and was part of the Swansonville community.

This Deposit Note, issued on December 30, 1893, for $175, is more than a financial document. It's a tangible snapshot of life during the peak of the lumber era. Just a decade before our church was built, this note represents the wages earned by the mill workers whose labor powered the entire community. For Thomas Johnson's family, it's a direct link to their great-grandfather's role in the local history we are working to preserve.

We are so grateful to be able to share this artifact. It reminds us that our mission to save the Swansonville Church is also about honoring the everyday stories of the families who lived and worked here.

Have a family artifact or story tied to Port Ludlow or Swansonville? We'd love to see it
